Blog Set 5

Reason
That fact that a robot can change a human’s mind about everything they believe in seems crazy and ridiculous. Powell and Donovan made a robot named QT who was a robot who actually had emotions. He had so much curiosity that he explored everything to put his own ideas together and made them his beliefs.  Even though his creators specifically told him who he was, how he was made, and what he was doing there. Cutie didn’t believe a word they said including that earth was a planet and why he exists. He thought that him and his kind were the “new version” of things that were created and that humans were the “old versions”. Donovan stressed about the situation a lot more the Powell. Once Powell saw that Cutie could run the whole place by himself, then why did it matter what he believed? Donovan agreed and they left the situation alone and went back to Earth. They both didn’t tell the other guy who was going to be there for several weeks about the situation, which wasn’t very nice. What if they end up getting out of control? Powell and Donovan should have at least warned him.

Super-Toys Last All Summer Long
This story takes place in a very over populated place where couples can’t have a child without getting permission from the government. The father in the story was part of a very big technology company who made robots. I’m amusing that he brought home one of these inventions from his job to make his wife happy.   She didn’t really appreciate him even though he grew to love her so much just like a real mom. She finally gets a letter of permission to have her own real child. Now what would they do with David and Teddy? Well teddy is staying because he acts how they want him to act but they’re sending David back to the factory, which is sad. David really loved his family, even if he was a robot; he was still the first child figure she had. This story reminds me of Astro Boy because he was created to replace his creators son. He was viewed the same way David was expect he was more accepted than David was. The wife “tried to love David” as her own child since it would be the closest thing she would get to a child at the time. They used David as replacement to get what they couldn’t have. David was getting very curious about what was real and what was not real. I couldn’t imagine having a robot son.

The Culling

Right off the back, this story caught my attention. It really is such a similar story to Hunger Games. Lucian and Cole are brothers whose parents have passed away. Mrs. Bledsoe is the only mother figure they really have left. Lucian had a whole plan to get caught by the Imposers who are just the like guards in the hunger games. Both stories are in a wasteland and are demanded to do cruel things. In the Culling they have to pick which one of their loved ones have to die! Which is horrible and I can’t imagine having to be forced to do that. In hunger games they pick random people to fight till the death for entertainment. Lucian and Digory are on a mission to get as many people as possible to rebel over the people who are forcing them to live this life. This also reminds me of Divergent who also has a similar plot with Hunger games and The Culling. In Divergent they aren’t forced to do things like in the other two stories but they are forced to live a certain life style. All three of these stories involve outcasts who are tired of living their lives the way they do and are trying to get everyone together to go against the bad people who force them to live they way the do and in each story they do have loved ones who died because of what they go through on a daily basis.  It does make sense because many others feel that way but they are afraid to do something about it. There is way more numbers of people who hate what they’re going through than does in command. If they keep rebelling they will get somewhere in the end. I can't wait till see what Lucian and Digory are going to end up doing to accomplish this mission.

  1. I like your views on both stories, starting with "Reason". I too thought Powell and Donavon should have warned the next guy because I personally think would have gotten out of control and they will. I also don't think I could ever have a robot son. I found it sad how they wanted to send David back to the factory. At first I thought they were getting rid of Teddy, but looking back on the reading I can see they decided to keep him.

  3. You're question about whether or not David and Teddy will stay around now that the parents were granted permission to have a child of their own is a good one. I was wondering the same thing. It's kind of like the author left you with a cliffhanger. What will happen to David? Little Teddy, like you said, functions fine and would be a great companion for a real child but will they keep little David around for the same reasons? Or will they discard him as if he's just a hunk of metal? And I've never seen The Hunger Games but I appreciate your input on how their similar. I never knew the details of the similarities until I read your blog, so thanks!
